Wood Selection and Quality

Solid Hardwood vs. Veneer: Premium shelves are crafted from 100% solid one-piece hardwood (such as Walnut, Cherry, or Maple). Budget shelves often use particleboard with a thin wood veneer or stained softwood like pine to mimic real hardwood. Additionally, some wood shelves are constructed of glued pieces of wood, which breaks the grain pattern and looks unnatural. 

 

  • Grain Matching: High-end makers never glue strips of wood together but rather only use one-piece solid hardwood with continuous grain – the grain flows naturally around the front and sides of the shelf.

 

  • Drying Process: Premium wood is properly kiln-dried to a specific moisture content (usually 6–8%). This relieves stress in the wood and helps prevent the shelf from warping, bowing, or twisting as humidity changes.

         Internal Hardware and Engineering

 

  • Heavy-Duty Steel Brackets: The backbone of a premium shelf is a solid steel bracket with thick, welded support rods. Budget options often use thin, stamped metal or individual rods that sag under weight and can be difficult to install.

         Craftsmanship and Finish

 

  • Premium Finishes: High-end shelves use durable, maintenance-free, professional-grade finishes like catalyzed conversion varnish (CCV) that seals the wood, protecting it from scratches and water damage. Hard Wax Oils, Tung Oil, and similar products wear off and may require reapplication. CCV protects the wood from moisture and stains while highlighting the natural grain and color, leaving a lustrous, satin, smooth, textured surface.

 

  • Joint Construction: Mitered joints or glue seams break the wood grain pattern and look unnatural compared to one-piece solid wood with continuous grain around the entire wood shelf.

Wood Selection and Quality

A thick solid-wood floating shelf creates a bold look and, more importantly, provides enough space inside to fit a heavy-duty hidden bracket. To build a 2.5” thick one-piece hardwood shelf, you need to begin with a 3” wood slab. 3” thick hard maple, cherry, or walnut wood slabs are expensive and not readily available anywhere, so to maintain a consistent supply, we must process our own wood. Processing our own wood means we select the logs we like – solid logs with the greatest potential for natural wood character.

 

                               

Wood selection is a big advantage for us because here in Pennsylvania we have around 100 species of wood, and much of it is hardwood. Honey Locust, Sycamore, Ambrosia Maple, Burly Elm, and more – so many hardwood species, all with unique natural tones – all amazing woods we use to build our one-of-a-kind solid hardwood shelves. Our selection of wood species and our selection and processing of our own wood distinguish us from 98% of other shelf makers.

 

Properly dried wood is critical to wood shelf quality. Did you know it takes a year to dry an inch of hardwood? That 3” black walnut slab, freshly sawn, may have an internal moisture of 40% - it needs to be 15% before it can be kiln-dried. This typically requires 2 years of air drying before it can be kiln-dried to reduce internal moisture to an acceptable 7-8%. Without proper drying, hardwood will warp, crack, and split, so to keep up with our wood shop demand, we need to have wood drying at various stages.

                        

                                                     

Internal Hardware and Engineering

A true “Floating Shelf” has a bracket hidden inside the wood shelf, with no hardware exposed. To accommodate our heavy-duty steel bracket, we need the 2.25” shelf thickness to fit the bracket's 1.5” backplate that contacts the wall. Budget floating shelf makers typically use a 1” backplate, with 50% less contact with the wall than our 1.5” backplate.

 

                                   

We rout and drill each shelf to fit its hidden floating shelf bracket. When you receive your shelf, simply measure where you want to install it. Once you’ve determined the shelf location, fasten the one-piece steel bracket to the wall, then slide the wood shelf onto the bracket. Job complete!

 

Buyer beware – again, budget wood shelves usually employ cheaper bracket systems that include individual pins or other hardware, making installation more complicated and usually less safe. Premium wood floating shelves use strong, easy-to-install steel post or aluminum cleat brackets.   

 

         

Craftsmanship and Finish 

What good is a beautiful wood shelf with a sloppy finish? We apply a flawless catalyzed conversion varnish (CCV) finish that’s permanent and maintenance-free. The two-part curing process forms a thick, robust protective layer designed for daily, heavy-duty use. CCV is more durable than oil-based finishes, lacquers, or polyurethanes. Its elasticity expands and contracts without cracking – moving with the wood during seasonal humidity changes. CCV is a non-porous barrier that resists water, heat, harsh household chemicals, and scratches.    

 

CCV stays clear and does not yellow like oil-based varnishes, polyurethane, traditional lacquer, or boiled linseed or Tung Oil.
